Arlington National Cemetery - America’s Scared Shrine.

Located in Arlington, Virginia, Arlington National Cemetery was officially authorized as a military cemetery on June 15, 1864, by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. Arlington National Cemetery has the second-largest number of graves of any national cemetery in the US. Veterans from all the nation's wars are buried in this cemetery - including 3,800 former slaves called "Contrabands" during the Civil War who are buried in Section 27 with their headstones designated with the word "Civilian" or "Citizen." Arlington National Cemetery conducts about 6,400 burials each year. Flags are flown at half-staff from a half hour before the first funeral until a half hour after the last funeral each day.  [Top]

Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is one of the most famous sites at Arlington National Cemetery. Made from Yule marble quarried in Colorado, the Tomb of the Unknowns overlooks Washington, D.C. Sculpted into the east panel of the white marble sarcophagus are three Greek figures representing Peace, Victory, and Valor. West of the World War I Unknown are the crypts of unknowns from World War II, Korea and Vietnam.  [Top]
